Traditional technique – jiigoku-gumi

This somewhat unusual architectural design that comes in the shape of a bamboo basket, is located in a residential area in Tokyo´s, Minami-Aoyama. It houses Sunny Hills, a shop specializing in pineapple cakes, particularly popular in Taiwan. The structure was designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates, using the traditional technique, jiigoku-gumi, consisting of woven lattice timber, a material with a life cycle of over twenty years. Not that long if you´re used to European building customs, nevertheless, here it is quite the average time for a building. Like it?
Have a great weekend everyone!
